Heinrich Schütz’s “Schwanengesang” is one of the great mysteries of music history, because here a composer negates all adversity, even the impossible. He countered the endless suffering of the Thirty Years’ War with grandiose music. The certainty of his faith tells that life is stronger than death.
The direct comparison with Paul Hindemith’s “Messe a cappella” from 1963 shows astonishing parallels. Here, too, war, persecution and inner turmoil meet musically with believing consolation, confidence and new courage.
Together with the writer Robert Schneider (“Schlafes Bruder”), the ensemble cantissimo combines these two masterpieces with the swan song texts specially written of him.
